Conferences can make or break your brand

This week I’ve been thinking about small moments and how they impact our bigger stories.

Make One Person Smile and Your Whole World Will Change

I enjoy meeting people, chatting, and laughing. But I’ve noticed that many people don’t engage with the barista, the waitress, or the driver.

Say hello. Ask them how their day is going. And truly listen.

The surprise on their face says it all.
It’s such a small thing, yet it makes a huge impact.

The Future of Sales (and Why Most People Still Miss the Point)

This week, I decided to attend a sales conference called The Future of Sales in the Age of AI.
What I saw there blew my mind, and it had nothing to do with AI.

Over 100 people were sitting in the room when the CEO of the sponsoring company took the stage to introduce himself and his company.

With all the AI hype and my passion for sales, I thought I might learn something new, maybe a few tools I could implement with my clients.

It took about 30 seconds before I realized the whole event was wrong, or at least wrong for me.

The CEO could not clearly articulate what the company does. The panel had great speakers, an insane amount of buzzwords, and zero value.

The reason was simple. No one practiced. No one told a story. And no one shared a single actionable example that could help the audience.

Most of my clients go to events and sponsor keynotes or panel discussions.
This is an opportunity not to be missed.

When you know who the audience is and what they want, you need to write, practice, and deliver value every 30 seconds.

From a powerful calling card to a clever giveaway to a clear pitch and key stories you can share.
If you do not have these ready, do not spend money on events.

But more than anything, do not gamble your reputation on stage.
If your audience, your true fans, the ones who need you, cannot understand your offer, this is not a what problem. It is a you problem.

Focus on figuring out who you are and why people should choose your service.

And here is a secret: sometimes, you achieve market fit with just a good pitch. Nothing else.

If you can’t bring value or solve a problem, go do something else.

What Do You Do When Things Don’t Go as Planned?

Two weeks ago, I had a plan. It was a good plan.
And then I injured my knee. They said it was from stretching my back too much during the South African motorcycle trip.

The doctor told me to rest. The physio and acupuncture are helping.

Health issues with people close to me, work stress, and a distant friend passing away. My body was taking a beating, and I found myself with some pain in my chest.

I’m okay. But I thought this week’s Building in Public should go out to all of you.

Find time to rest, to step away, to reflect.

I’m also thinking about scale. Do I return to the agency model? Build a SaaS? Or focus on licensing?

Right now, my main breakthrough is my method, the concept for my Business Catcher book. Going back to my notes, improving ideas, and proving my work with clients from around the world, I can see that it works. It’s powerful and practical, and it changes how brands think about action.

I still need to rest a bit more, but I’m also going to write more.

This week, I’m happy to share episode two of my new show.
